[App] SMS Corrector fixes incoming text messages from your horrible spelling friends

Sure, there is built in spell checking in your keyboard, and there’s plenty of spell checking apps. But what if other people’s bad spelling and “SMS speak” really annoys you? Thankfully there is now a cure for that. It’s called SMS Corrector and it’s free in the Android Market. OMG, LOL, BBQ!

The application is compatible with all popular SMS apps such as Chomp and HandCent, as well as the stock SMS app, and works in both English and French. It features auto detection of SMS speak abbreviations as well as spelling. There’s also a feature to add your own translations and you can set a tolerance for how much you want it to correct. There’s even a fun stats feature where you can see who your worst offending friends are. It’s currently available for devices running Android 1.6 or higher.

On Monday AT&T announced that their entire line-up of Android phones released in 2011 will receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. Also included on that list is the Samsung Captivate, which was released in 2010. Although no specific timelines were given, the Atrix 4G is currently getting treated to its OTA update. And the update for the Samsung Infuse 4G is expected within a few weeks.

    The list of confirmed phones:
    • Motorola Atrix 4G
    • Samsung Infuse 4G
    • LG Phoenix
    • HTC Inspire 4G
    • Pantech Crossover
    • Samsung Captivate
For a brief moment there, the HTC Status was the only phone on AT&T that was running Gingerbread since it was the only one that launched with it. But customers with one of the above listed phones can breathe a sigh of relief because your update will be coming…eventually. The rest of AT&T Android owners will have to either look into a buying new phone or rooting and giving your device the CyanogenMod 7 treatment.

Usually when a phone doesn’t get timely upgrades, people tend to blame Google first, but it’s a little bit of the manufacturer and a little bit of the carrier causing the hold-up. It’s good to see AT&T at least taking some initiative and at least reassuring customers they will get an update eventually. It should also be noted that Sony Ericsson has promised Android 2.3.3 for the Xperia X10 late Q2/early Q3, but there’s no word if that update will actually hit AT&T customers.

Boy Genius has just scooped this render of a yet-unnamed Samsung device headed to AT&T in the near future. It’s currently unknown if it will be a Galaxy S II variant (like the Epic 4G was) or if it’s just another mid-range device. But it’s certainly not the AT&T Galaxy S II that was accidentally outed on Facebook a few weeks ago.

The obvious major selling point will be the full QWERTY slide out keyboard. There are also 4 capacitive buttons instead of the usual 3, apparently at AT&T’s request, which are also mirrored on the hardware keyboard. The phone will be directly competing with the likes of Verizon’s freshly released Motorola Droid 3 and T-Mobile’s MyTouch 4G Slide.

Unfortunately there’s not much more to go on aside from this picture. It should be hitting AT&T within the next couple of months, but we’ll keep out eyes out for more details.
