Samsung Epic 4G owners looking for your 2.2 tomorrow? Not so fast

We previously reported, along with many other sites, that an OTA rollout of Android 2.2 was going to happen for Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G tomorrow. Based on a legitimate looking screenshot of what appeared to be a Sprint computer. Now TheDroidGuy is reporting via a tipster that it was a false alarm and it's not happening tomorrow. But with no definitive ETA on the update.
Samsung Epic Software Update (Froyo 2.2 Version) Not Available Yet
Despite what many websites are saying, Android software version Froyo 2.2 is still on hold. If customers ask about this update, explain the following:
  • The current Samsung Epic software version is DI18.
  • There is no firm delivery date for the Froyo 2.2 software update, but it will be available in the near future
As with many of these rumors of firmware updates, It's usually best to hear it from an official source first, or just see it happen firsthand. Or there's always that manual update that's been floating around.

CyanogenMod 7 gets Alpha release for Nexus S, other phones under development

As a nice Christmas surprise, Koush released an Alpha of CyanogenMod 7, running Gingerbread 2.3 for the Nexus S. It's still an early build, so there are bugs, but the CyanogenMod team is busy at work to get everything smoothed out and start publishing actual release candidates. CM7 for the Nexus S is available via ROM Manager or from the xda-developers thread here.

And not just the Nexus S is getting CM7 love, there are early builds out there for the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z, MyTouch 4G, HTC EVO 4G, and Nexus One. You may need to use the experimental 3.0 version of ClockworkMod to flash the Gapps package.

Be aware all of these are very unstable and nowhere near complete. Cyanogen himself even warned to those that want to flash early builds. And since none of these builds are official releases, don't bother trying to report bugs or bothering the developers if you brick your phone.

This is great news for all those Android modders that just aren't happy with the stock firmware on their phone and want the latest available version of Android.
